Not a lot of folks have the good fortune to sit at both sides of the business table. Being an employee as well as being an employer. Fortunately by some good luck, I had the opportunity to be in discussions retaining to new hiring from both sides of the table. For over 8 years as a business owner and now as a 4 year old employee. Since this happens to be my first “job” I end up making these fascinating observations. How I used to run my business what outcome it produced. How is it different in culture where I am presently employed at. Hearing stories from friends and families about how decisions are made at their workplace give me even more data points for my research.
Today’s thoughts and reflections on when is the ideal time to make a new hire. The short answer when you start finding one single person is having to do both strategy and tactical work, that is the time, a new hire to offload the tactical work. This move can work wonders. But before you judge me, hear me out. Sure, the person can focus more on strategy, but now he gets free time to implement the previous strategies with his own soon to be built tactics such so as to provide positive business results.
That for me, is when you hire a new resource. The new hire get hands on with all the tactical work, learn. While at work they will try to reduce their work pressure by implementing some strategy and tactics. If as a manager you are seeing the person reporting to you is trying to find out strategies to get his tactical work more streamlined, you get the first hint, this new person is slowly able to understand how the business is working.
And the circle continues, the direct report slowly builds into a gem of an employee. Now they need to be given a fresh set of hands and the cycle continues. That’s how I used to find out why and when a new HIRE is required. But that was me. The rest of the world especially the corporate world does not work like that. Understandbly so. At scale, having this personalized approach to hiring may not be feasible.
It would be a great thing to get help as I try to 3X account revenue in 3years. To get a helping hand, but ALAS. I know, the company has decided to freeze all hiring. Sometime hurdles are a good thing. It helps us grow as an individual.
Thanks
