It is very important to know where to stop – a lesson from my grandfather

I’ve heard my mother say this multiple times over. Boya always used to say, “Its important to know where to stop”.”There’s no end to want, yet its quintessential that you draw a line”.

I used to call my grandfather “Boya”. Funny story for a later day why and how he got that name.

As I write this, I cannot help but recollect a client conversation I had few weeks back.

Mark, is an Indian American living in the states for the past 30 years. He owns 2 motels. He was keen on finding ways to ensure both his hotels is able to generate revenue of $1M+. He knew his goal. He had drawn the line.

Not saying that he cannot go ahead and make 20 other luxury hotels, no, not for once am I indicating that. With Mark’s brilliant business acumen, he can do that any day. But he chose life over money many many years ago.

Every year he goes out on vacations, he ensures he visits his native place in India every year. Without a miss.

Every time I interact with a client of mine, I try and understand if they have a line drawn or not? Do they know the end goal?

A recurring pattern I notice? Each client who knows the end goal, the working relationship with them becomes so friendly, that goals get achieved before designated timeline.

That’s the power of setting and knowing your goals. Drawing the line. Knowing when to stop. Have you drawn your line?
